A softcover is fine on a desk. This page is about the book that goes in the bag every day and still opens flat in twelve months.

There is a real difference between a notebook you write in and a notebook you carry. A stapled softcover is often the better buy on paper quality per dollar — the Clairefontaine 1951 is the obvious case — and it will not survive a year in a bag with keys, a laptop and a water bottle.
So this page assumes the book is going to be carried, and judges accordingly: binding first, paper second, features third.
What actually fails on a carried notebook
Not the paper. Three other things, in roughly this order.
- The spine. A glued block cracks and pages fall out. A thread-bound block — sewn in signatures — does not, and it is also the only binding that lies genuinely flat once broken in.
- The corners. A soft cover rounds off and then frays. A hardcover with rounded corners survives being pushed in and out of a bag hundreds of times.
- The closure. Without an elastic or a strap, a carried notebook fans open and collects everything in the bag between its pages.
None of that shows up in a specification table, which is why hardcover journals get sold on cover material and page count instead.
The criteria we ranked on
- Is the paper weight published? The same rule as everywhere on this site. A maker who will not state a figure is asking to be trusted rather than checked.
- Is that weight enough for both sides of the page? A journal is written on both sides — that is the whole economics of it — so bleed-through costs you half the book, not a cosmetic annoyance.
- Is the block thread-bound? Because that is what decides whether it survives and whether it lies flat.
- Does the structure earn its place? Numbered pages and an index are genuinely useful. A ribbon is not a reason to buy.

1. Structure plus heavier paper

100 gsm is the number that removes the argument. At that weight a wet medium nib is comfortable and a broad is workable, which is not true of the 70-80 gsm books this competes against.
The format copies the structured-journal template closely — hardcover, elastic, pocket, ribbon — so you are not trading features for the paper.
Cream paper warms every ink slightly. If you have chosen a color carefully, it will not look the same here as on white.

This is the notebook that answers the most common complaint about the structured-journal category: it publishes 90 g/m2, which is comfortably above what a wet nib needs, and it states the dot spacing as well.
Japanese 90 gsm is dense and tightly sized, so it sits at the top of what this site can recommend on published figures alone rather than on reputation.
What it does not have is numbered pages or a printed index. If you want a bullet-journal system out of the box, that is a different purchase.

Rhodia and Clairefontaine are the same group, and the paper is the reason to buy either. It is coated and hard-sized, so ink sits on the surface rather than soaking in — which is what stops feathering before it starts.
A wet ink in a broad nib is the hardest test a notebook faces. This is the book that passes it.
The trade is drying time. Ink that sits on the surface takes noticeably longer to dry, which matters if you are left-handed or in a hurry.

The structure is genuinely excellent: numbered pages, an index you fill in yourself, two ribbons and a pocket. Nothing else at this price is as well organized out of the box.
The paper is the argument against, and the listing now puts a number on it: 80 g/m2. That is the lower end of what a fountain pen is comfortable on — adequate for a dry nib, marginal for a wet one.
If you write with a fine nib and a dry ink, this is a fine book. If you have just bought a broad nib and a wet blue, it is the wrong one.

The paper is the same family and behaves the same way: ink sits on the surface, lines stay sharp, drying takes its time.
There are no page numbers and no index, so if you want a bullet-journal structure you will be drawing it yourself.

Four of five publish a weight. That ratio is better than the category average, and it is the reason the two that publish the highest figures rank at the top here rather than the most famous book on the list.
Hardcover, clothbound or vegan leather?
Mostly a preference, with one practical note. A coated or vegan-leather cover wipes clean and resists a wet bag; a cloth cover marks and holds the mark. Neither affects the writing.
What does matter is whether the cover is stiff enough to write on in your hand without a desk. That is the real functional difference between a hardcover and a softcover, and it is the reason to pay for one at all.
Size, briefly
A5 is the default and the right answer for most people — big enough for a real entry, small enough to carry. Going smaller to B6 makes it more portable and turns it into a log rather than a journal; going bigger makes it a desk book. The notebook sizes guide sets out how the A and B series relate.
What to write in it
If the journal is going to last years, the ink is worth a moment's thought — a dye ink fades with light exposure and dissolves in water, while a pigment ink does neither. Inks for journaling covers the trade, including why a very saturated black is tiring to read across a full page.

What is the best hardcover journal for fountain pens?

Are hardcover journals better than softcover?
