Tomoe River is the paper that makes the case against judging paper by weight. Its maker publishes 52 g/m2 and describes it as half the thickness of copy paper. By the usual rule of thumb that should be hopeless for a fountain pen — and it is one of the most highly regarded fountain pen papers in the world.
Why it works
Sizing. The paper is treated to resist liquid so thoroughly that ink cannot penetrate the fiber structure; it sits on the surface and dries there. Weight only predicts bleed-through when it is a proxy for how much fiber there is to absorb liquid, and hard sizing removes absorption from the equation.
That is also why it displays ink better than anything else. Ink that stays on the surface pools unevenly and dries unevenly, and uneven drying is exactly what shading and sheen are. If you want to see what a shading ink can actually do, this is the paper to see it on.

Tomoe River breaks the rule the rest of this page runs on. Weight normally predicts bleed resistance, and at 52 g/m2 this paper should be hopeless. It is not, because it is extremely hard-sized: the ink cannot penetrate, so it sits on top and dries there.
That is also why it shows sheen and shading better than anything else. Ink that stays on the surface pools and dries unevenly, and uneven drying is what shading is.
It is not a general-purpose notebook. The paper is nearly translucent, ghosting is severe by definition, and drying times are long.

Iroshizuku is where most people discover that ink can be interesting. Kon-peki shades — the same stroke goes light where the ink pooled less and dark where it pooled more — and that variation is what makes handwriting look considered rather than printed.
It is a wet ink. On the 70 gsm paper in a supermarket notebook it will show through, and on the worst paper it will bleed. Pair it with 90 gsm or better and it behaves.
It costs several times what a bottle of everyday blue costs, and it will last you a year of daily writing regardless.

Skip this if the paper you actually write on is thin office stock — a wet ink on absorbent paper wastes the ink and ruins the page.
The three prices you pay
Ghosting is severe
Ink does not come through, but the paper is nearly translucent, so you will see the writing on the reverse of every page. That is ghosting rather than bleeding — no ink has penetrated — and whether it bothers you is entirely a matter of taste. Some people find it beautiful. Others find it unusable. The difference between the two is worth understanding before you buy.
Drying is very slow
Ink held at the surface has nowhere to go but into the air. Expect drying times several times longer than on ordinary paper, which makes this the worst possible paper for a left-handed writer who smudges — see inks for left-handers.
It feels alarming to write on
The sheet is thin enough to feel fragile, and it crinkles under a wet nib. It is more durable than it feels, but the first page is a surprise.

Anyone who wants to see what their ink actually looks like, anyone who needs a very high page count in a thin book, and anyone writing on one side only. Not the person who wants a general-purpose notebook — for that, buy 90 gsm coated paper and enjoy the faster drying.
